IBPS Customer Service Associate / Clerk Recruitment (CRP CSA)
IBPS Clerk — officially Customer Service Associate (CSA) — is the largest recruitment channel for clerical posts in 11 public sector banks, run as one Common Recruitment Process every year. Unlike IBPS PO, this is a state-wise exam: vacancies are announced state by state, you apply for one state/UT only, you must be proficient in that state's local language (checked through a qualifying language test), and the cut-offs are declared state-wise and category-wise. There are two online stages — a qualifying Preliminary and a merit-deciding Main — and no interview: your final merit is the Main exam score alone. The mains pattern was recently rebuilt around weighted marks (200 marks, 125 minutes, 160 questions), so section value differs per question and the mains, not the prelims, is where selection is actually won. Fixed syllabus, fixed sectional timers, lakhs of applicants per state — this is a speed-and-accuracy game where shortcuts + sectional drills + state-aware target scores beat generic study.
2026 cycle — status
✓ Verified 4 Oct 2026Prelims admit cards are out (posted on ibps.in on 1 October 2026) and the prelims is scheduled for 10–11 October 2026 per exam-calendar compilations (the official notification says October 2026). Applications closed on 21 August 2026. From here: prelims result (around November 2026), Main exam (December 2026), then Provisional Allotment (March 2027). If you are appearing, you are in the final-revision window — one timed mock every alternate day, sectional drills on your weak area, and your state's target score pinned above your desk.

Vacancy count is the state-wise sum of IBPS's updated annexure as on 29 September 2026 (the notification-time annexure was around 11,403): UR 4,878, OBC 2,863, SC 1,936, ST 962, EWS 1,024, with PwBD, Ex-Servicemen and displaced Ex-Servicemen sub-quotas in each state. IBPS revises these numbers during the cycle, so treat the official annexure as canonical. Recruitment is for one state/UT of your choice — you compete only against candidates of that state.

Exam pattern
Preliminary Examination (Qualifying) Qualifying — shortlists candidates for the Mains
Online CBT · 60 min · One-fourth of the marks assigned to the question (−0.25) per wrong answer
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 |
| Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Flat +1 per correct answer, −0.25 per wrong answer, with a separate 20-minute timer on each section — you cannot move between sections or bank time. You must clear the sectional cut-off in each of the three tests and land inside the shortlist; IBPS shortlists an adequate number of candidates per category per state, depending on that state's vacancies. The prelims score is discarded after shortlisting — only the mains counts in the final merit. Available in English and Hindi plus the regional languages notified for your state.
Main Examination (Objective, merit-deciding) Merit-deciding — mains marks alone form the final merit (no interview)
Online CBT, separately-timed sections · 125 min · One-fourth of the marks assigned to the question per wrong answer
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General / Financial Awareness | 40 | 50 |
| General English | 40 | 40 |
| Reasoning Ability | 40 | 60 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 50 |
| Total | 160 | 200 |
This is the revised mains structure — 160 questions for 200 marks in 125 minutes, replacing the older 190-question scheme — with weighted marking: Reasoning carries 1.5 marks per question, General/Financial Awareness and Quantitative Aptitude 1.25, General English 1.0. Section order is not fixed on screen and each section is separately timed (20 + 35 + 35 + 35 minutes). You need a minimum score in each test and a minimum total, decided state-wise and category-wise against vacancies, to be considered for provisional allotment. Candidates should expect to be at the venue for about 3 hours including formalities. Marks obtained in the mains only are considered for the final merit listing.
Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) and Provisional Allotment Qualifying language test — then merit-based allotment to a bank
Conducted after the mains, by an independent body or the bank · min · Marks-based but **qualifying only** — failing it removes you from the process
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Total |
You pick one local language at application time from the list for your state/UT. Candidates who have studied that language in Class 10 or above (with a mark-sheet/certificate as proof) are exempt from the test. Since there is no interview, the mains merit list flows directly into provisional allotment across the 11 participating banks, honouring state-wise vacancies and reservation norms. Allotment validity runs one year from the date of provisional allotment or until a fresh allotment, whichever is earlier.
Eligibility
Citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with permanent settlement intent, or a person of Indian origin migrated from the listed countries (with a Government of India eligibility certificate where required).
A Degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a Government-recognised university or equivalent — you must be a graduate on the day you register and must indicate your graduation percentage (computed to two decimals)
Operating and working knowledge of computer systems — a certificate/diploma/degree in computer operations or language, or Computer/IT as a subject in High School/College/Institute
Proficiency (reading, writing, speaking, understanding) in the specified local language of the state/UT you apply for, verified through the qualifying LLPT unless you studied that language at Class 10 level or above
Not eligible — the degree must be complete as on the registration cut-off (21 August 2026 for this cycle)
| SC / ST | +5 years |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | +3 years |
| PwBD | +10 years |
| Ex-Servicemen / disabled Ex-Servicemen | +5 years (with service-based concessions; ESM completing their engagement by the notified date are eligible to apply) |
| Widows / divorced women (not remarried) | +9 years |
| Persons domiciled in J&K during 1 Jan 1980 – 31 Dec 1989 | +5 years |
Age is computed as on 01.08.2026 for this cycle. Because recruitment is state-wise, you can apply for vacancies in only one state/UT — choose it on language and home-ground advantage, not on a single year's cutoff. Category claimed at registration is final after the edit window; the OBC (NCL) certificate must carry the non-creamy-layer clause in the prescribed central format.

Selection process
Prelims (qualifying) → Mains (final merit) → Local Language Proficiency Test (qualifying) → Provisional Allotment. The prelims filters candidates per state and category through sectional cut-offs plus a shortlist. The mains — 160 questions, 200 marks, 125 minutes — alone decides the merit; there is no interview. Mains-qualified candidates then clear the local-language test (unless exempt with Class-10 proof) and IBPS allots them to a participating bank against the vacancies of the applied state/UT. Since marks are normalised across shifts with the equi-percentile method, your state's cut-off — not your raw score — is the number to beat.
Normalisation (why your raw score ≠ final score)
Because the exam runs in many shifts with different papers, IBPS normalises corrected scores across sessions using the equi-percentile method, carrying scores to two decimals, before declaring results and cut-offs. Practical reading: (1) never compare raw marks across shifts, years or states; (2) a tough shift is not a penalty — the normalised score is what counts; (3) target scores should come from your state's recent cut-offs, which vary enormously (recent prelims cut-offs ranged from the mid-40s to the high-80s out of 100 across states).

FAQs
Can I apply for more than one state in IBPS Clerk?
No. Recruitment is state/UT-wise and you can apply for vacancies in only one state or UT. You must also be proficient in that state's local language — checked through the qualifying LLPT — so pick a state where you have a genuine language and domicile advantage, not just a lower-looking cutoff.
Is there an interview in IBPS Clerk?
No. Selection is mains-only: marks obtained in the Main examination alone form the final merit, followed by the qualifying local-language test and provisional allotment. This makes mains accuracy worth more than in PO, where an interview can still rescue a marginal score.
What is the negative marking in IBPS Clerk?
One-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for each wrong answer in both stages. Unanswered questions cost nothing. In the mains, where questions are worth up to 1.5 marks, a wrong guess costs proportionally more.
Is there sectional timing and a sectional cut-off?
Yes, in both stages. Prelims: 20 minutes each for English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning, with a sectional qualifying cut-off in each test plus a state-wise shortlist. Mains: separately-timed sections (20 minutes General/Financial Awareness, then 35 minutes each for English, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude) with minimum marks per test and a minimum total for the merit consideration.
What is the current mains pattern?
The revised structure is 160 questions / 200 marks / 125 minutes: General/Financial Awareness 40Q/50M/20 min, General English 40Q/40M/35 min, Reasoning Ability 40Q/60M/35 min, Quantitative Aptitude 40Q/50M/35 min — weighted marks (Reasoning 1.5 per question, others 1.25 and 1.0), replacing the older 190-question scheme. Always re-check the current notification; IBPS explicitly reserves the right to change the structure.
What is the Local Language Proficiency Test?
A qualifying, marks-based test of your chosen state's local language (reading, writing, speaking, understanding), conducted after the mains and before joining. Candidates who studied that language in Class 10 or above and can show the mark-sheet/certificate are exempt. Failing it removes you from the process even with a merit-list rank.
How does normalisation work?
IBPS normalises corrected scores across exam shifts using the equi-percentile method (to two decimals), so candidates facing harder papers are not disadvantaged. Published cut-offs are always on normalised scores — comparing raw marks across shifts or years is meaningless.
Can final-year students apply?
No. You must already be a graduate on the day of registration, with a valid mark-sheet or degree and your exact graduation percentage (to two decimals) filled in the form. Documents are verified later.
Is a computer certificate really required?
Yes — clerical eligibility demands operating and working knowledge of computers, evidenced by a certificate/diploma/degree in computer operations or language, or Computer/IT as a subject in High School/College/Institute. If your Class 10 or 12 mark-sheet shows Computer/IT as a subject, that itself works as proof.
How many attempts are allowed?
There is no attempt limit — apply every cycle until you cross the age limit (28 for the general category, 31 for OBC, 33 for SC/ST, plus PwBD relaxations).
What salary does an IBPS Clerk get?
Basic pay is ₹24,050 on the clerical scale (₹24,050 – ₹64,480), with dearness allowance, HRA and other allowances as per bank rules. Indicative take-home is around ₹35,000–₹45,000 per month depending on the bank and city — treat online figures as approximations.
What score should I target in the prelims?
It depends entirely on your state — recent general-category prelims cut-offs have ranged from the mid-40s (Gujarat 45.25, Maharashtra 46, Karnataka 46 in 2025) to the mid-80s (Chandigarh 86.5, Delhi 84, Uttarakhand 85 in 2025) out of 100. Use your own state's last two years of cut-offs plus a 5–8 mark safety margin, and respect the sectional timers.
How is IBPS Clerk different from IBPS PO?
Clerk is state-wise (PO is all-India), has no interview (PO: 100-mark interview worth 20%), requires a local language and computer-literacy proof, and tests Numerical Ability (school-level arithmetic) in the prelims rather than Quantitative Aptitude. Clerk postings stay within your applied state; PO postings can be anywhere in the bank's network.
What documents are needed at joining?
Matriculation certificate (date of birth), graduation mark-sheets and degree, the computer-literacy proof, the local-language Class-10 proof if claiming LLPT exemption, category certificates in the prescribed format (OBC NCL issued on or after 01.04.2026; EWS income-and-asset certificate for the current year), PwBD/Ex-Servicemen certificates where claimed, and photo ID. Keep the printed prelims and mains call letters too — banks ask for stamped copies at joining.
Documents for document verification
Across the process, keep ready: matriculation certificate (date-of-birth proof), graduation mark-sheets and degree certificate with the exact percentage you entered, computer-literacy certificate (or mark-sheets showing Computer/IT as a subject), local-language proof (Class 10 or above certificate for LLPT exemption), category certificates in central-government format — OBC non-creamy-layer issued on or after 01.04.2026, EWS income-and-asset certificate valid for the year, SC/ST/PwBD/Ex-Servicemen certificates as claimed — plus photo ID and printed call letters of both stages. Since allotment is state-wise, your state's language and category documentation must match your application exactly; discrepancies surface at the bank's joining verification.
