What the job actually is
Junior Statistical Officer is a Group B post in the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (NSSO/CSO). It is the only CGL post with an academic gate — you must have Statistics as a subject in your degree, and you also sit Paper 2 (Statistics) in Tier 2. The trade: a slightly lower pay level for a technical, research-flavoured career.
- Field-operations support for national surveys (household consumption, employment, industry) — scrutiny of schedules and data quality
- Data processing, tabulation and analysis in FOD offices or CSO divisions
- Report drafting for publications used by every economist in the country
- Far less public contact than tax/customs posts; the work is technical and team-based

Indicative for 2026. DA revises twice a year, HRA depends on your posting city (X/Y/Z class) and stops if you take a government quarter, and TA varies by city and level. Where this differs from your office's first pay slip, the pay slip is right.

Times are typical ranges seen in recent years; cadre strength, zone and DPC regularity move them a lot.
You studied Statistics, prefer data work to enforcement, and want a government career where the degree you earned is actually used. The Paper 2 gate thins the competition sharply.
- FOD survey duties can include touring your region for field scrutiny — it is not a pure desk job
- Pay level 6 is a rung below the Level 7 posts; the exam discount is the competition relief you are buying
- Fewer posts than tax/customs, so cut-offs behave differently — a "safe" tier-1 score for other posts may not be safe here
