What moves the cutoff
- Sectional cutoffs. Clearing the overall figure is not enough if you fall short in any one of the three tests.
- Number of vacancies and the number of candidates who appear in each shift.
- Difficulty of the paper in each shift. IBPS normalises across shifts, so the overall figure moves with the paper.
- Prelims marks do not count in the final merit, so do not over-invest in it after crossing the cutoff comfortably.
What to aim for
For prelims, aim for about 5 to 8 marks over last year's UR cutoff to stay safe. For mains, aim well above the cutoff in the heavy sections, which are reasoning and data analysis.
