Detailed notes
Awakening the 19th century
Raja Ram Mohan Roy — the 'father of modern India' — began with the Atmiya Sabha (1814) and founded the Brahmo Sabha/Samaj (1828), preaching monotheism and against idolatry. He campaigned against sati (abolished 1829 under Bentinck, with his persuasion), for widow remarriage, a free press and English education; his works include the Gift to Monotheists. Debendranath Tagore (Tattvabodhini Sabha) and Keshab Chandra Sen later led the Brahmo Samaj through its splits. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar carried the widow-remarriage campaign to law — the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856 — and wrote the Bengali primer Borno Porichoy. Prarthana Samaj (1867, Atmaram Pandurang; M.G. Ranade, Bhandarkar) worked for theistic worship and social reform in Bombay. Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj (1875) — 'Back to the Vedas', shuddhi (reconversion), DAV education. Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission (1897) (Chicago address 1893) on service. The Theosophical Society (1875, New York; Blavatsky & Olcott; Indian HQ Adyar, 1882) found its Indian voice in Annie Besant. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan began the Aligarh movement — MAO College (1875), later Aligarh Muslim University — for modern education among Muslims. The Deccan Education Society (1884, Tilak-Agarkar, Fergusson College) and Gokhale's Servants of India Society (1905) trained public workers.
Lower-caste and regional assertions
Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule — Satyashodhak Samaj (1873) and Pune's first girls' school (1848). Sri Narayana Guru (Kerala) — the Ezhava reformer who consecrated the Aruvippuram Shiva shrine (1888) and inspired the SNDP Yogam (1903) — 'one caste, one religion, one God for man'. Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy launched the Self-Respect Movement (1925) in Tamil country for caste and gender equality. Sikh revival — the Singh Sabha (1873, Amritsar). In Maharashtra, Gopal Baba Walangkar and later Shahu Maharaj pushed reserved seats and caste reform; B.R. Ambedkar's Mahad Satyagraha (1927) opened the struggle for untouchable rights.

Types of questions asked
Every way this subtopic shows up in exams — how to recognise it, the formula or logic to use, and a solved example.
Type 1: Organisation ↔ founder ↔ yearvery common3 practice Q
'Who founded X Samaj/Sabha in year Y', match-the-column across Brahmo, Prarthana, Arya, Ramakrishna Mission.
- Chain: Atmiya Sabha 1814 → Brahmo 1828 (Roy) → Prarthana 1867 (Atmaram Pandurang) → Arya 1875 (Dayanand) → Ramakrishna Mission 1897 (Vivekananda).
- Auxiliary bodies: Theosophical Society 1875 (Blavatsky-Olcott), Aligarh MAO College 1875 (Sir Syed), Satyashodhak 1873 (Phule).
- Don't swap Prarthana (Bombay, theistic) with Brahmo (Calcutta, monotheist).
Example: The Prarthana Samaj was founded in 1867 by —
Atmaram Pandurang — with M.G. Ranade and R.G. Bhandarkar as its famous workers.
Type 2: Reformer ↔ cause ↔ workvery common3 practice Q
'Who campaigned for widow remarriage', 'Kesari vs Borno Porichoy', education-for-all pioneers, shuddhi.
- Vidyasagar = widow remarriage campaign + Borno Porichoy; Roy = sati abolition; Dayanand = Back to the Vedas + shuddhi.
- Phule = girls' school (1848) + Satyashodhak; Narayana Guru = Ezhava upliftment; Periyar = Self-Respect.
- Vedic-revival vs Western-education lines: Arya Samaj (Vedic) vs Brahmo (rationalist universalism).
Example: Who organised the campaign that led to the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856?
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar — petitions, Sanskrit scholarly defence, and a public fund for remarried widows.
Type 3: Reform legislation timelinecommon3 practice Q
'Sati was abolished in', Age of Consent Act details, Sarda Act year and ages, order of the four laws.
- 1829 sati (Regulation XVII) → 1856 widow remarriage → 1891 Age of Consent (12) → 1929 Sarda Act (18/14).
- All four are legislative landmarks — exams often ask 'which came first' or exact ages.
- Bentinck signed sati's abolition; the Sarda Act is pre-Independence's child-marriage law.
Example: The Sarda Act (1929) fixed the minimum marriage age at —
18 for boys and 14 for girls (Child Marriage Restraint Act).
Type 4: Regional and lower-caste movementscommon3 practice Q
Sri Narayana Guru's Kerala work, Periyar's Self-Respect Movement, Singh Sabha, Mahad Satyagraha.
- Narayana Guru (Kerala, Ezhava): Aruvippuram 1888, SNDP Yogam 1903, 'one caste, one religion, one God'.
- Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy: Self-Respect Movement 1925 (Tamil Nadu).
- Singh Sabha 1873 (Sikh revival); Mahad Satyagraha 1927 (Ambedkar, water-tank rights).
Example: The Self-Respect Movement (1925) was launched by —
Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy — for caste equality and women's dignity in Tamil society.
Shortcut tricks
⚡ 1875 — the year of three
Arya Samaj (Dayanand), Theosophical Society (Blavatsky–Olcott) and the Aligarh MAO school (Syed Ahmad Khan) all date to 1875.
Example: Which two of these began in the same year — Arya Samaj, Brahmo Samaj, Theosophical Society, Ramakrishna Mission?
Arya Samaj and Theosophical Society (both 1875).
⚡ Founder hooks
Ram Mohan = Reform of sati (Brahmo, 1828) · Dayanand = Discover the Vedas (Arya) · Phule = People of lower castes (Satyashodhak) · Vivekananda = Vedanta service (RK Mission, 1897).
Where students lose marks
Ramakrishna Mission was founded by Vivekananda (1897), not Ramakrishna Paramahamsa himself.
Theosophical Society was founded in New York, then moved to Adyar.
Widow Remarriage Act 1856 = Vidyasagar; sati abolition 1829 = Ram Mohan Roy's campaign.
