✨ Login to trackIndia's retail payments run through NPCI, set up in 2008: RuPay cards, IMPS, UPI and more. The RBI's digital rupee is legal tender in digital form. Inclusion schemes such as PMJDY, MUDRA and the Kisan Credit Card carry banking to every household.
NPCI and its products
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) was set up in 2008 under the RBI and the banking industry. It runs most retail payment rails.
| Product | Year | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| AePS | 2010 | Bank services at a MicroATM using Aadhaar and a fingerprint |
| RuPay | 2012 | India's own card network |
| UPI | 2016 | Instant payments from a phone |
| Bharat BillPay | 2016 | One network for utility bills |
| BHIM | Dec 2016 | The government's UPI app |
| NETC FASTag | 2016 | Toll payment stickers |
Tip: AePS is the rural door: no phone needed, just Aadhaar and a fingerprint at a banking correspondent's machine.
UPI in detail
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) went live in April 2016. Payments use a virtual payment address (VPA), so bank details stay private.
- Usual cap: ₹1 lakh per transaction. Hospitals, education, capital markets and insurance carry ₹5 lakh limits.
- UPI AutoPay (2020) handles recurring payments. UPI Lite (2022) makes small payments without touching the core banking system. UPI 123PAY (2022) works on button phones.
- In February 2023 UPI linked with Singapore's PayNow, the first cross-country link.
The digital rupee
The RBI's Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) is called the digital rupee (e₹). It is legal tender, like notes, but exists digitally. Wholesale pilots began on 1 November 2022 and retail pilots on 1 December 2022.
Rule: Cryptocurrencies are private and unregulated. The digital rupee is the RBI's own money.
Financial inclusion schemes
| Scheme | Year | Key feature |
|---|---|---|
| PMJDY | 2014 | Zero-balance account, RuPay card, ₹2 lakh accident cover, ₹10,000 overdraft |
| Kisan Credit Card | 1998 | Cheap crop loans to farmers |
| MUDRA (PMMY) | 2015 | Collateral-free small business loans |
| Atal Pension Yojana | 2015 | Assured pension for unorganised workers |
MUDRA loans come in slabs: Shishu up to ₹50,000, Kishore ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh, Tarun ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh. A Tarun Plus slab (up to ₹20 lakh) was added in 2024 for borrowers who repaid a Tarun loan.
Priority sector rules push banks to lend to farming, small firms and weaker sections: 40% of bank credit for universal banks.
Watch: PMJDY is 28 August 2014; MUDRA is 8 April 2015. Exams swap these two years often.
Banking access and customer care
White-label ATMs, allowed from 2013, are owned by non-bank companies. India Post Payments Bank (2018) carries banking to the post office.
For complaints, the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (2021) replaced the old Banking Ombudsman Scheme of 1995. One ombudsman now covers all complaints, filed free on the RBI's central portal.
Example: A customer's UPI payment fails and the bank does not help. After 30 days, the RBI's ombudsman portal is the next stop.

Wrong: Calling BHIM a bank. Right: BHIM is an app for UPI payments, launched in December 2016.
Wrong: Mixing MUDRA's Shishu and Tarun limits. Right: Shishu up to ₹50,000; Kishore to ₹5 lakh; Tarun to ₹10 lakh.
Wrong: Saying PMJDY accounts need a minimum balance. Right: They are zero-balance accounts with a RuPay card and an overdraft facility.
Wrong: Saying a white-label ATM belongs to a bank. Right: A non-bank company owns and runs it.
